*Includes medallion taxicab, car services and black cars. Does not include “gypsy cabs” or limousines.

Car services refers to for-hire vehicles serving neighborhoods around the city, primarily on a cash basis. Black cars refers to executive sedans primarily charging corporate accounts. Limousines charge by the hour and seat up to nine passengers. "Gypsy cabs" refers to vehicles not licensed to work for-hire and picking up street hails. See definitions of taxicabs, liveries, car services, black cars and limousines.

Car service and "gypsy cab" figures are estimates for 1964-83. The number of gypsy cabs has greatly diminished since the mid 1980s.

Car service, black car and limousine figures in 1992 and later years reflect the number of licensed vehicles. Note that the shift to biannual licensing has somewhat inflated the number of licensed cabs in 2000 and later years as compared with earlier years, as a larger number of licenses are no longer used but had not yet officially expired.
